Muir Organic Energy Gels

Muir Organic Energy Gels Review

Energy availability

The energy took a little bit longer to quick in when compared to other gels (about 4 minutes longer)

Energy duration (30-minute test)

This gel didn’t quite give me the boost that other gels gave me during the run. I don’t look at the gel pre-test so that there isn’t any type of expectation during the run. This energy gel left me scratching my head after I was done with my run. The gel tested, Muir Cashew Vanilla, had 145 calorie packs with 90 mg of caffeine. The other gels tested gave me way more energy than this particular gel.

Availability

Most running stores and big chain grocery stores don’t carry these gels. This might be due to the Muir brand being relatively new. They are available online through Amazon and other retailers. Don’t forget that half marathons take planning so you’re not caught trying to find your energy gels at a store on race day morning. Because these gels are hard to find you definitely need to order ahead if this is the gel you choose. Check out this awesome half marathon checklist for half marathons which includes all items needed for a happy half marathon plus detailed information on what you need to do the week of your half marathon race.

Flavors Tested

  • Muir Cashew Vanilla (organic) – This tasted nothing like what the title of the energy gel insisted. I felt like it tasted like an over-cooked tootsie roll combined with over-roasted cashews melted together with natural tree molasses. There was no hint of vanilla at all in this gel. Also, the consistency was thick and was gritty which didn’t go so well when it entered my mouth. Almost like they forget to puree the gels entirely through. This also could be due to the products supposedly being hand made. The gel had a tiny aftertaste. My stomach didn’t totally agree with this gel. About 25 minutes after consuming the gel my stomach had a couple of sharp pains. At one point I slowed down to a walk for a minute or two. Eventually, the pains went away.
